Review: Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)

Director: Edgar Wright
Screen Writer: Michael Bacall, Edgar Wright
Cast: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Plot: Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to win her heart.

Pros: From the opening shot you will know who this movie is for. As the pixelated Universal Pictures screen displays and the song plays curiously in 8-bit sound, everyone who ever owned a game system in the 80’s will crack a subtle smile. Here’s my biggest Pro: The movie was completely original in a landscape of remakes and overdrawn trilogies originality comes at a premium. If you’re tired of watching yet another remake of King King or The Count of Monte Cristo, SPvTW is a great bet. Also Great fight scenes.

Cons: Depending on your perspective, you may find the movie a little young and geeky. I don’t know it that qualifies as a con in my book, but I had to write something.

Overall: It’s fresh, fun, and funny. It has a ton of diversity in it, and Michael Cera completely pulls off the lead role. I’d give it a definite DVD rental with friends who are ready to have fun. It was fun in the theater, but not a necessary theater experience. Good Movie.
