[Black History] A Brief History of Morehouse College

In 1867, two years after the Civil War ended, Augusta Institute was established in the basement of Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga. Founded in 1787, Springfield Baptist is the oldest independent African American church in the United States. The school’s primary purpose was to prepare black men for the ministry and teaching. Today, Augusta Institute is Morehouse College, which is located on a 66-acre campus in Atlanta and enjoys an international reputation for producing leaders who have influenced national and world history.

Black College Alumni Chapters donate Thanksgiving baskets to local residents

Members from four Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU’s)alumni chapters set aside school rivalries, in the name of giving recently, if only for a day. Florida A & M Rattlers pitched in with Bethune Cookman Wildcats while Morehouse Tigers worked alongside Hampton Pirates during their annual Turkey basket give-away. This was the scene at the Northwest Federated Women’s Club last week, as all joined forces to insure local families were provided with all the fixings needed to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Three HBCU medical schools out-ranked Ivy Leaguers

Howard University, Morehouse College, and Meharry Medical School topped a recent national study for having a strong social mission as part of its medical teachings.

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities institutions out-ranked Yale, Harvard, and Stanford Universities in graduating physicians who practice primary care and work in underserved areas, and recruiting and graduating young, minority physicians, The Social Mission of Medication Education: Ranking the Schools, revealed.
