[Real I-Robot] The Actroid: Japan’s incredibly human-looking robot

The Actroid bobs “her” head shyly, and curls artificial muscles to produce an enigmatic, Mona Lisa smile. The robot even blinks every so often, and scrunches up its forehead.

A new robot in Japan might be easy to miss. Researchers unveiled the Actroid-F Wednesday near Tokyo.

The robot has silicon skin – allowing it to make expressions such as blinking and frowning. It also can bow and tilt its head to one side.

The facial movements can be remotely controlled from a computer. The robot can also mimic humans.

Researchers hope Actroid-F can one day be used to provide companionship for patients at hospitals and nursing homes.
