Celebrity International Adoption: Fan or Not?

After adopting a son David about two years ago, the material girl has just been stopped from adopting another girl named Mercy James from the impoverished country. According to Reuters:

The ruling will please campaigners who say authorities have given the singer special treatment. Malawi’s government, which came under fire after Madonna adopted a 13-month-old Malawian boy, had said on Thursday it would support a second adoption.

Court registrar Ken Manda told reporters Madonna’s bid to adopt Mercy had been rejected because the star was not a resident of Malawi. An AIDS epidemic in the impoverished southern African country has orphaned more than one million children. In her ruling, Judge Esimie Chombo warned against celebrity adoptions, saying they could lead to child trafficking.

“Anyone could come to Malawi and quickly arrange for an adoption that might have grave consequences on the very children that the law seeks to protect,” she said.

How do you feel about celebrity adoption? Do you think the child is exposed to a better lifestyle? Do you think the countries should be able to say “NO”? Your Thoughts??

  1. I think the celebrities should start at their local foster home before they go out of the country. There are millions of kids nationwide that are not fortunate enough to have a parent in their life in your own city.

  2. I think that with all the children in the U.S. foster care system no one has to go 3,000 miles away to some remote village to take a child away from their homeland. I always hear how it's too difficult to adopt in the U.S. well it seems to me that these celebrities who have the ear of the President, Senators, Congress, Governors, Mayors and other political types would be trying to lobby for legislation that makes it adoption more accessible. I sick of the designer baby fad. Quit acting like you are buying a purse in the Bloomingdale's online.

  3. Personally I think if a celebrity wants to adopt a child its a great thing because that is one less child in the world who does not have a home. Whether a celebrity wants to adopt a child close to home or from Siberia its there business.

  4. Clean up your own home first, ie ADOPT at home first, then if you want to help the world, that is a lovely thing. But look to thine own home first.
