Civil rights groups in Georgia and North Carolina are upset by plans in a handful of snow-stricken school districts to make up lost school days on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
In North Carolina, leaders of the state chapter of the NAACP are upset that the Charlotte-Mecklenberg County School system is holding class on the holiday.
In Georgia, King’s home state, NAACP leaders want two rural counties in northern Georgia to reconsider holding classes.
Georgia NAACP President Edward DuBose says the holiday should be an opportunity for everyone to reflect on what King’s dream meant.
School officials say they have little flexibility in making up for the lost time. In North Georgia’s Fannin and Gilmer counties, school was canceled all week by crippling winter storms.

I an Educator. I don’t see a problem with holding classes on the holiday. MLK would be proud to know that the education of young minds are viewed as more important than an observance of the holiday. It’s not as if it’s a routine process of neglecting the “King” holiday but a necessary response to natural enviornmental situation. I don’t see it being political. Each state has a minimum number of days a school district has to hold classes. The distict is simply attempting to stay within those guidelines.
